Sarcoid Is my Murphy alone.

Am I alone....  Murphy my 4 year old gelding has a sarcoid on the loose skin where his testicle once lived.  I have had the vet out to look at it and he said he did not want to take if off as it was the type that has broken through the skin and would get bigger then drop off.   This was back in April, and yes it has got bigger but not dropped off.  I have subsequently rang the vet back who is still adamant it should be left as cutting this type of sarcoid off could result in it returning.  Its not really bothering Murphy but it is me. Anyone any info for me.

Re: Sarcoid Is my Murphy alone.

My daughters horse had loads of sarcoids, they all seemed to come up at once, our vet came and looked at them but he didin't feel he could do much with them so refered him to The Royal Vets College Potters Bar. He was treated there over about eight or nine weeks, the first week he stayed there as they put him out and cut off about six/seven, he had chemo on another four/five and had about another six frozen. Once he was out of there, he was sore but fine he had to go back weekly and had to be re treated with the chemo for seven weeks (once each time we went back). He didn't have to stay over they treated him and he came home each night. It might have been different if we lived further away (we traveled about a hour/hour and a half) to get there. He spent a lot of time in the stable and hated being in for such a long time but it was worth it.

Two years on now he has no sign's of any coming back. Fingers crossed Smile

Thanks for your reply.  The vet told me of different treatments including surgery and chemo etc, but said the type Murphy has will drop off.  He did say there was a possibility of tying it off to cut off the blood supply but said he would rather it happen naturally to prevent it coming back Smile

Aouple of my donkeys have had them over the years and all our vet does it put a castrating ring on them -the type used on lambs  It works fine and causes donkey no distress  Not recomended during the fly season though as can cause a bit of bleeding .

We had small sarcoids on one of our donkeys. We didn't treat them and eventually they disappeared. If they're not bothering him, or under harness etc, I think best left alone.

Thanks for you info.  I mentioned the castrating ring and the vet did say it was an option but he'd rather wait.  It is a relief knowing others have gone through this.  Ive owned horses for 30 yrs but never had this problem.  I guess it's a case of let nature take it course. [|-)]
